WHAT IS IT?
The Bias Inside Us is a traveling exhibit and community engagement project sponsored by the Smithsonian, which aims to raise awareness about the science and history of bias and how people can change. The goal of the exhibit is to help communities encounter their implicit biases and create forms of dialogue that can increase empathy and inspire inclusivity throughout society.
MY ROLE
The goal of the project was to present educational information about homophobia in a clear and concise manner. My personal goal was to make easily and quickly digestible posters for a very broad audience, aka the entire student body at Eau Claire. We were given near total creative and informational freedom for these posters. The only exceptions were the use of the Smithsonian logos, and we had to utilize the color scheme from The Bias Inside Us brand package.
I singlehandedly executed all research related to homophobia, and crafted the language to be as straightforward as possible. These posters were displayed in transitionary areas on campus, such as hallways, so I focused on simplicity and legibility. As for the graphics, I used framing lines in order to pull the viewer's focus in on the facts presented. I used the same three motifs (squares, frames, and border) throughout the nine posters. I saw no need to distract the viewer further from the facts when the color scheme was already quite vibrant and eye-catching.
